About Shorea Wood and Linseed Oil
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring. Shorea (red lauan) wood will have variations is color - from a red to a yellow cast.
The Shorea wood for this item is treated with linseed oil. Linseed oil is not a varnish. The oil soaks into the pores of the wood leaving a shiny (not glossy) surface that shows off the grain of the wood. Linseed oil helps protects the wood from denting by compression and from accelerated deterioration.
After assembly simply wipe the bench with a damp cloth to remove any excess oil that may be remaining. Please note that it is recommended to let your bench sit outside for 2-3 days before sitting on it to let the stain air out and completely dry.

Each piece is ready to paint, oil, or leave natural. When left untreated it weathers to a soft gray. If treated, it should be treated with finish products meant for softer woods because Red Lauan is a dense wood. A yearly application is recommended, or as weather conditions dictate.

These chairs go together quickly and look great. They're very comfortable to sit in too. The parts to one chair fit perfectly; the other one took some coaxing, including re-drilling the guide holes for some screws. The wood is absolutely beautiful, but wood tone of chair pieces can be noticeably different. I think this won't be so obvious once they've weathered a bit. I'm using these on the front porch of my cabin, which is in a rental program when I'm not there. Will be interested to see how they hold up to rental abuse. These came together very well and I'm certain they're sturdy enough for home use.

As with many purchases, you get what you pay for. I chose this chair because it seemed attractive based on the Web picture, was made of wood, and most importantly didn't cost much. Assembly was pretty straightforward. Many reviewers complained that screw holes didn't line up and they needed to re-drill some of them, which was my case also. But again, that's expected for the price. Once assembled, I had to let it sit in the Sun for a couple of days for the factory applied oil finish to penetrate the wood. Until then, you can't sit in it without getting residue on your clothes. My only other issue is the wood is rough, it has a rough cedar texture. But it's tolerable. But overall it is very comfortable, sits well and looks good on my porch.

Received the two chairs, ottoman, and table today as promised and it took less than an hour to assemble all four items.
I read how holes didn't match up and some had to re-drill holes. I did not have that problem at all. One of the reviews indicated the secret was not to tighten any of the hardware until the chair was completely assembled. Assembling the chairs this way allowed all the pre-drilled holes to match up.
The only other thing I would recommend is getting a packet of flat washers to use with the bolts. Other than that it went quick, the instructions were fool proof, and all pieces fit exactly. The new furniture looks great on our patio.

The chair arrived as promised and was very easy to assemble! It is very comfortable, especially with the ottoman we purchased at the same time. It is quite heavy which is good - it won't be blowing across the yard! I am looking forward to many seasons of enjoyment.
